Get to know yourself: You are unique
How much time do you invest in comparing to others? How often do you reflect and study yourself? Get to know yourself: You are unique.
Margaret Mead, an American anthropologist, once said: “Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.”
Don’t we love to get to know everything about other people (our family, friends, colleagues,…), how they are, think, live, work..?
I personally love to find inspiration and learn from others, read about their story, listen to their knowledge and experience – for me it’s refreshing, motivating and absolutely necessary.
But I’ve realised and reconfirmed, that I sometimes look for the answer “outside” when really it’s already within me: I just need to take a moment and listen to it. In the yoga philosophy, the practice of “Svadhayaya” includes introspection and the study of the self. Studying our current situation, personality, (re)actions, goals, beliefs, intentions, emotions, fears, joys, strengths, weaknesses, relationships, interests, mind and body… gives us incredible insights.
So here I am, in a wonderful week full of learnings and new inspirations, taking a moment to remind both myself and all of you:
Only you
…feel (with) your own body.
…see the world through your eyes.
…process information the way you do.
…have full and complete access to yourself.
In my personal case, and especially during busy times or moments of change, it really helps me to
- find a quiet space to think,
- take a specific experience, idea, opportunity, problem… and asking myself open-ended questions around it,
- write down my thoughts in a journal,
- practice meditation and mindfulness to observe myself without judgement.
What helps you to get to know yourself better?
