Start your day consciously and calm
Why would you directly look at your phone or rush out of bed? Start your day consciously and calm, in slow mode.
If you think you don’t have time for that, maybe you can wake up 10-15 minutes earlier.
Here are a few recommendations, that I personally combine in the way it feels good, depending on the day and time I have.
You could:
- stretch your body, especially your neck, shoulders, arms, back, fingers and toes.
- do some breathing exercises eg. take a few deep inhalations and exhalations and if you want: put your hands on your abdomen/diaphragm and feel how it expands and contracts while you breathe through your nose.
- do a little meditation just sitting quietly (with a straight back) and focusing on the air going in and out of your nose. Breathe naturally. Observe and accept any thoughts rushing through, just stay there for a few minutes.
- move slowly, express love and kindness towards yourself and your body (you are just waking up).
- open your window and take in the fresh air of the new day ahead.
- practice to be present and focus on what you are doing. Eg. if you have a shower: focus on the sound of the water, the smell of the gel or shampoo, the sensation of the water on your skin, … don’t let your mind wander ahead or plan the next step.
- write down your thoughts if there is something on your mind you keep thinking about. This could be proper journaling to express any ideas, fears, etc. or writing down To Do’s you don’t want to forget (I recommend a block of notes or paper instead of the phone –> see point 9).
- have a conscious breakfast. Sit down to eat and/or have your coffee/tea … enjoy it slowly, observe and taste everything you take in.
- most importantly: keep your phone out of sight, all apps closed and any other screens switched off until at least 20-30min after getting up. If you can spend longer without a screen after waking up, that’s even better.
You will see you will start your day with enhanced mental clarity, and generally in a much more relaxed, positive state.
The best thing: You will notice these benefits throughout the whole day.
How was your experience? What are your recommendations to start your day consciously and calm?
I would love to read you in the comments.
